The Buffalo Sabres have finally made a move to strengthen their blue line, picking up defencemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets.
In return, Buffalo will send forward Isak Rosen, defenceman Jacob Bryson, a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, and a fourth-round pick in 2026. As part of the trade, Winnipeg will retain 50% of Schenn’s salary.
Stanley, a Regular on the Jets’ Line
Stanley has been a regular on the Jets’ blue line this season. The 27-year-old, 6-foot-7 left-shot defenceman has nine goals and 21 points in 59 games while averaging just over 17 minutes of ice time per night.
He is in the final season of a two-year, $2.5 million contract that carries a cap hit of $1.25 million and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Originally drafted 18th overall by Winnipeg in 2016, Stanley has appeared in 261 NHL games so far, recording 14 goals and 57 points during his career. Fans looking to place bets or track the action can find all the latest lines and updates at TigerGaming Sportsbook.
Schenn Brings Championship Pedigree
Schenn brings a very different profile to Buffalo’s defence corps. The 36-year-old right-shot defenceman has one goal and six points in 46 games this season with the Jets, while averaging 13:44 of ice time.
Winnipeg picked him up at last year’s trade deadline from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for two draft picks.
Schenn is also playing out the final year of his current contract, a three-year deal worth $8.25 million with a $2.75 million cap hit. Like Stanley, he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Beyond his experience, Schenn also brings a championship pedigree. He was part of the Tampa Bay Lightning teams that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.
Buffalo gives up some young talent in the deal. Rosen, 22, has three goals and seven points in 16 NHL games with the Sabres this season. The Swedish forward was selected 14th overall by Buffalo in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
Bryson, meanwhile, is a 28-year-old left-shot defenceman who has spent the past six seasons with the Sabres organization. He has two goals and five points in 35 games this year and is also set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
The move comes after a complicated few days for Buffalo ahead of the trade deadline. Earlier this week, the Sabres had reportedly worked out a deal with the St. Louis Blues for veteran defenceman Colton Parayko, but that trade fell apart when Parayko used his no-movement clause to block it.
Buffalo was also linked to Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers before he ultimately ended up with the Dallas Stars.
