Summary:
- The Montreal Canadiens crushed the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 at Little Caesars Arena.
- Jakub Dobes stopped 30 shots to earn his first win of the season.
- Zack Bolduc and Oliver Kapanen both scored for the second straight game.
Jakub Dobes stopped 30 shots to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a convincing 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.
Mike Matheson had a goal and an assist, while Brendan Gallagher and Nick Suzuki each picked up two assists for Montreal (1-1-0). The victory came a night after the Canadiens, to the disappointment of fans who enjoy to bet on their favorites, dropped their season opener 5-2 to Toronto.
Coach Martin St. Louis said,
I think we’ve been good in both games. These guys have bought into the team game. There is a commitment to do the things the game asks you to do.
Detroit opened the scoring early on the power play when Patrick Kane faked behind the net and found Dylan Larkin in front for a quick finish at 3:50 of the first period. However, the Red Wings’ momentum didn’t last long. Zack Bolduc slipped behind the defense and beat goalie John Gibson at 10:14 to tie it 1-1.
It was Bolduc’s second goal in as many games since joining Montreal from St. Louis this summer.
Forward Jake Evans commented,
I think we’ve got a lot of talent and we’re dangerous all over the lineup. We’re a tougher team to defend and the new guys like Zack are part of that.
Oliver Kapanen put Montreal ahead a few minutes later, finishing a beautiful passing play with Alex Newhook for his second goal in as many nights. The Canadiens struck again just before the end of the period when Matheson fired home from the slot to make it 3-1.
St. Louis.,
Our collective game is being connected on both sides of the puck, offensively and defensively. We look really fast at times, because our collective game gives us predictability.
Slafkovsky on Dobes: “A Young Goalie with a Crazy Style”
Alexandre Carrier made it 4-1 early in the second with a long wrist shot over Gibson’s shoulder, sending the Detroit goalie to the bench. Cam Talbot took over in relief, but Juraj Slafkovsky added another power-play goal late in the period to seal the win.
Slafkovsky said of Dobes,
He’s a young goalie with a crazy style. I laugh when I watch him play, because I don’t know how he makes it work. Somehow, he does.
Larkin called the loss “even more disappointing because it was such a special night”, with three Red Wings making their NHL debuts. “You always want to make that special” he said, “but there wasn’t much going on out there that was special“.
